Our Mountains

The largest collection of 14,000 ft peaks in the lower 48 states is right here in the Buena Vista area.  It is a climbers paradise!  Of the 54-14ers in Colorado, 14 are here in the Upper Arkansas Valley and another six are not far away.  In total, there are 161 peaks, 13,000 feet or higher in the Sawatch Range.

The River

Here in the Upper Arkansas Valley, 50 miles south of the Arkansas headwaters, you will find some of the best white-water rafting and kayaking venues in the country.  This area has been a favorite of rafting afficianados for years and now the mile-long play park for kayakers, at Buena Vista, has added to the excitement.

For fisher-folk, the Upper Arkansas River from Leadville south for 100 miles has been deemed a Gold Medal fishing area.

Our Trails

For hikers and bikers, Buena Vista and Salida offer trails that go on and on.  Within the Salida and Leadville Ranger Districts of the National Forest Service there are about 110 trails totaling about 375 miles.  Most of these are for hiking, but some are for bikes and some motorized.

In addition, the Colorado Trail and the Continental Divide Trail both traverse the valley. Combining parts of both trails, starting at Twin Lakes and ending south of Monarch Pass, one can hike a 160-mile loop, now known as the Collegiate Loop.
